The short answer

The Flow Express did not make the swirl marks on your vehicle’s finish — but we can help you fix them. The developer and designer of our wash (Car Wash Pro Designers) have been designing, building, operating and washing vehicles since 1991, and they stake their business and reputation on producing clean, shiny vehicles without damage. With close to 30 years in the car wash industry, they can say that with authority.

And of course, if you are still concerned — or you have a car with a matte finish, a wrap, or a ceramic coating whose applicator does not recommend a brush wash — we offer a true touchless wash option, so you experience exactly what our name implies: a gentle wash.

First — what is a swirl mark?

Swirl marks are circular microscopic imperfections on the surface of a vehicle, best seen on black or dark blue paint when illuminated by a single light source like the sun.

They are not the same as cracking or spider webs — both of which lie beneath the clear coat and result from imperfections or micro-fracturing in the paint itself. Most vehicles develop swirls, cracking and other surface marring over their lifespan to one degree or another, and these can usually be resolved or minimised with professional, regular wax treatments.

Where the reputation came from

Nylon brushes, and the 1970s

Vehicle paints, coatings and finishes — and car wash chemicals and cleaning technology — have advanced enormously over the past few decades. The old perception was created back in the early days of car washes, when most of the washing power came from scrubbing action rather than detergent chemistry or wash pressure.

When most of the cleaning had to be done with brushes and friction, the degree of friction was ramped up. Older-style brushes were more abrasive and often worked with less lubrication which, combined with single-stage paint jobs, made minor scuffing a regular occurrence. Back in the 1970s and ’80s, nylon brushes were famous for creating swirl marks.

Today our MacNeil SuperFlex foam wraps are the gentlest, safest and most effective foam wrap-around tunnel brushes you’ll find. They offer controlled cleaning pressure with total foam-brush clutching regardless of conveyor speed, and an over-centre reach of six feet for excellent front coverage on bumpers and grills. All of our cloth cleaning material has zero nylon.

We also run dedicated day and evening maintenance and quality checks, with water filtration (R/O), measured detergent application, water pH testing and high-pressure washing as standing safeguards.

So what does cause them?

Four real causes

There are several reasons swirl marks occur, each of which holds truth depending on the situation.

Single-stage paint

High-quality foreign cars in dark blue or black are sometimes still painted with old-fashioned single-stage paint, resulting in a more fragile clear coat that is more easily affected by regular washing materials — in both hand washes and automatic washes. Antique and high-end vehicles should always be cleaned with great care.

Revealing wear and tear

As a wash cleans a vehicle it reveals imperfections and scratches previously obscured by dirt and dust. The cleaner the vehicle, the easier it is to spot lines and nicks from blowing sand, highway debris, and improper hand-washing practices — one-bucket washes, dish soap and artificial sponges are far more damaging than most owners realise.

Perception bias

Nearly every vehicle on the road has marks of one kind or another. You usually only see them when you're looking for them — and after paying for a wash, people look closely. We compare any marks against the pattern of our brushes: if the swirls run in a different direction, our equipment couldn't have made them. Our Ultra 4K surveillance system also reviews each vehicle before it enters the tunnel.

Wax layering

New vehicles arrive from the dealer with a heavy coat of professionally applied wax that disguises existing cracks and spider lines. As that wax breaks down, a wash can thin and polish it further, bringing out imperfections that were never visible before. A fresh coat of professionally applied wax corrects this — it's why regular waxing matters, especially on very dark or flat paint tones.

How can you tell if our equipment caused it?

If the brushes or chemicals in a wash were to damage a vehicle, the pattern of damage would follow very specific patterns matching the motion and action of the equipment used — and typical swirl marks usually don’t fit the bill. We would also be happy to demo a vehicle through our wash to demonstrate the quality of the wash, and the absence of any damage as a result.

It’s worth noting that there is a real chemistry to cleaning vehicles. Many people believe it’s just soap, water and friction — but the science considers the pH level of the water, which lets our cleaning solutions lift typical soils up off the finish while always maintaining a barrier against it. Home and bucket washing, poorly maintained unattended gas-station washes, and detailers using old or dirty supplies are all more likely to cause damage.
